Do you know exactly what is in your home right now? If something were to happen (knock on wood), would you have enough coverage through your homeowners policy to replace your home as well as all of the items inside that you cherish?
What about all the Christmas decorations you keep in the basement until the season comes? Or all your summer clothes you box up until the snow melts? Or even the savings bonds you keep in your desk drawer because you haven’t gotten around to buying a fire safe (Jessica, buy a fire safe…)? These things are important to you, but you may not think about them until they are needed.
Taking an inventory of what you have in your home cannot only help keep you organized (you may throw out the “Happy 10th Birthday” sign your mom made 20 years ago…), but it can also help point you in the right direction toward rebuilding your home.
Be sure to discuss this with your insurance agent when applying for new coverage or renewing your current policy. Having accurate coverage on your home and its contents is very important, but it doesn’t do you any good if you can’t remember everything you had.
